This is not a fresh recruitment drive open to the general public. It is meant strictly for serving Lower Primary and Upper Primary teachers who already work under the Directorate of Primary Education, District Primary Education Committees, or Municipal Primary Education Committees and who want to move up to the Head Teacher post through the Semi Direct quota.

Gujarat’s Head Teacher, Class-III Recruitment Rules, 2016, revised in 2025, split every batch of Head Teacher vacancies into three streams in a fixed 1:1:2 ratio — one share for direct recruitment, one for straightforward promotion, and two shares for Semi Direct promotion through a competitive written test. HTAT Semi Direct Exam 2026 Notification Qualification
Service length comes first. A candidate needs at least five years working as a Lower Primary or Upper Primary Teacher, Class-III, under the Directorate of Primary Education or an equivalent District or Municipal Education Committee. Alongside that, the person must have already cleared the computer competency exam required under the Gujarat Civil Services Computer Competency Training and Examination Rules, 2006, and must have appeared for and passed the HTAT aptitude test itself.
On the academic side, the Board accepts a graduate degree in Arts, Science, or Commerce combined with a two-year Primary Teachers Course certificate, a one-year Special Education degree, or a Bachelor of Education. It also accepts a Higher Secondary Certificate paired with a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or in Education. Basic computer knowledge as defined under the 1967 Recruitment Rules and working proficiency in Gujarati or Hindi round out the requirements.

What the Application Will Cost
General category candidates pay Rs. 350, while SC and ST candidates pay Rs. 250. Neither amount comes back once paid, and the online gateway adds its own service charge on top. Payment stays open two days longer than registration itself, closing on 27th August 2026, which gives candidates who’ve submitted their form some breathing room to arrange payment.

- Complete the educational qualification section with degree and course details.

The Board has been explicit that the form must be filled entirely in English, and that details like name, date of birth, and category cannot be changed once submitted. A teacher rushing through this on a phone screen between school hours would be better off setting aside a proper half hour with all documents open, given how unforgiving that no-correction policy is.
How the Exam Itself Will Run
Test centres will be spread across Gujarat, with the Board deciding locations based on how many candidates register from each region. The question paper comes only in Gujarati, and the usual exam-hall restrictions apply: no phones, no calculators, no tablets, no smartwatches, nothing that could double as a communication device.
From Merit List to Appointment
Passing the exam and getting appointed aren’t the same thing here. The Board first prepares a merit list ranked by total marks, but actual promotions depend entirely on how many vacancies a given District or Nagar Education Committee has requisitioned. A candidate could clear the minimum passing marks and still not receive a posting if their district’s committee didn’t ask for enough seats that cycle.
Results come out in two parts — a merit-ordered list of successful candidates and a separate list of those who didn’t clear it, both showing seat numbers and marks.
