HTAT Semi Direct Exam Date 2026 Notification for 3,264 Head Teacher Posts

The State Examination Board, Gujarat State, Gandhinagar has opened applications for the HTAT Semi Direct Exam 2026, a promotion-linked examination for filling 3,264 posts of Head Teacher, Class-III. This is not a fresh recruitment drive open to the general public. It is meant strictly for serving Lower Primary and Upper Primary teachers who already work under the Directorate of Primary Education, District Primary Education Committees, or Municipal Primary Education Committees and who want to move up to the Head Teacher post through the Semi Direct quota.

The advertisement, numbered RPB/HTAT SCE/2026/9293-9300 and dated 1st August 2026, was published in newspapers two days later. Eligible teachers can register at ojas.gujarat.gov.in, and the window to submit forms closes on 25th August 2026. Anyone who has cleared the qualifying HTAT aptitude test and meets the service conditions listed below can apply before that date.

HTAT Semi Direct Exam Date 2026 Notification Out

Gujarat’s Head Teacher, Class-III Recruitment Rules, 2016, revised in 2025, split every batch of Head Teacher vacancies into three streams in a fixed 1:1:2 ratio — one share for direct recruitment, one for straightforward promotion, and two shares for Semi Direct promotion through a competitive written test. That written test is what candidates call HTAT, short for Mukhya Shikshak Abhiyogyata Kasoti. The Education Department capped Semi Direct vacancies filled this way at 11,000 overall, and the current cycle draws from that pool.

Only one paper is involved. It carries multiple-choice questions and follows the framework set out in the Head Teacher (Class III) Special Competitive Examination Rules, 2026, which the Education Department notified on 4th May 2026.

Registration opens on 11th August 2026, ten days after the notification became public, giving teachers time to arrange their service documents. Candidates get until 25th August to finish the online form, though the fee can still be paid until 27th August through net banking, debit card, credit card, UPI, or wallet. The Board has penciled in 4th October 2026 as the likely exam date, though it hasn’t ruled out a shift depending on how many candidates register.

District Primary Education Committees account for 3,125 of the total posts, and the remaining 139 belong to Municipal (Nagar) Primary Education Committees. Split by reservation category, General candidates get 2,532 posts, Scheduled Tribe candidates get 515, and Scheduled Caste candidates get 217.

The spread across districts is far from even. Dahod alone carries 317 vacancies, driven largely by its 126 ST-reserved posts, while Kutch offers 209 and Panchmahal 204. Smaller districts like Amreli sit at 114 and Bharuch at 94. A candidate weighing a transfer-linked promotion would do well to check their own district’s count before assuming a seat is guaranteed, because the Board release covers all 34 districts and 20 municipal areas in full, and only a sample is reproduced here.

HTAT Semi Direct Exam 2026 Notification Qualification

Service length comes first. A candidate needs at least five years working as a Lower Primary or Upper Primary Teacher, Class-III, under the Directorate of Primary Education or an equivalent District or Municipal Education Committee. Alongside that, the person must have already cleared the computer competency exam required under the Gujarat Civil Services Computer Competency Training and Examination Rules, 2006, and must have appeared for and passed the HTAT aptitude test itself.

On the academic side, the Board accepts a graduate degree in Arts, Science, or Commerce combined with a two-year Primary Teachers Course certificate, a one-year Special Education degree, or a Bachelor of Education. It also accepts a Higher Secondary Certificate paired with a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or in Education. Basic computer knowledge as defined under the 1967 Recruitment Rules and working proficiency in Gujarati or Hindi round out the requirements.

What the Application Will Cost

General category candidates pay Rs. 350, while SC and ST candidates pay Rs. 250. Neither amount comes back once paid, and the online gateway adds its own service charge on top. Payment stays open two days longer than registration itself, closing on 27th August 2026, which gives candidates who’ve submitted their form some breathing room to arrange payment.

HTAT Semi Direct Exam 2026 Notification Filling Out the Form, Step by Step

  1. Open the official portal at ojas.gujarat.gov.in and locate the HTAT Semi Direct 2026 link.
  2. Select “Apply Online” and start a fresh application.
  3. Enter personal details exactly as they appear on official records, since corrections aren’t allowed later.
  4. Complete the educational qualification section with degree and course details.
  5. Save the form to generate an application number, and keep that number safe.
  6. Upload a photograph sized 5 cm by 3.6 cm and a signature sized 2.5 cm by 7.5 cm, both in JPG format under 10 KB.
  7. Preview the completed form and click “Confirm Application.”
  8. Pay the fee through the available online modes.
  9. Download and print the confirmation copy once it’s generated.

The Board has been explicit that the form must be filled entirely in English, and that details like name, date of birth, and category cannot be changed once submitted. A teacher rushing through this on a phone screen between school hours would be better off setting aside a proper half hour with all documents open, given how unforgiving that no-correction policy is.

How the Exam Itself Will Run

Test centres will be spread across Gujarat, with the Board deciding locations based on how many candidates register from each region. The question paper comes only in Gujarati, and the usual exam-hall restrictions apply: no phones, no calculators, no tablets, no smartwatches, nothing that could double as a communication device.

From Merit List to Appointment

Passing the exam and getting appointed aren’t the same thing here. The Board first prepares a merit list ranked by total marks, but actual promotions depend entirely on how many vacancies a given District or Nagar Education Committee has requisitioned. A candidate could clear the minimum passing marks and still not receive a posting if their district’s committee didn’t ask for enough seats that cycle.

Results come out in two parts — a merit-ordered list of successful candidates and a separate list of those who didn’t clear it, both showing seat numbers and marks. Final appointments follow strict merit order, subject to the appointing authority confirming the candidate’s overall suitability for the post.
